Does a small business website need an AI chatbot?

Not always. An AI chatbot earns its keep when visitors ask the same questions after hours, want to book, or leave without calling. If your site gets little traffic, or nearly every customer phones you, make sure the phone gets answered first. AERIOX, for example, adds an AI chat agent to a website you already have for $99 a month, setup included.

When a chatbot helps

  • After-hours questions. People browse in the evening and on weekends. A chatbot can answer "Do you serve my area?", "Are you open Saturday?" or "What does a service call cost?" from the information you give it, while you're off the clock.
  • Booking. When a visitor is ready, a chatbot that books into your calendar or hands over your booking link turns a browse into an appointment without a phone call.
  • Lead capture. Some visitors won't call and won't fill out a form, but they will type a question. A chatbot can ask for a name, a number and what they need, and send it to you.
  • The same questions every day. If you answer the same five questions on the phone daily, putting those answers on your site, in a page and in a chat, gives you that time back.

When it doesn't

  • Very low traffic. If only a few people visit your site a week, a chatbot will have only a few conversations. Put the money into getting found and answering the phone first.
  • Everything happens by phone. If most of your work starts with a call, missed calls are the bigger leak. See what missed calls cost.
  • Answers need a site visit or judgment. Custom quotes, diagnoses and anything that depends on seeing the job are beyond a chatbot. The most it should do is take the details and pass them to you.
  • Nobody will keep it current. A chatbot that quotes last year's prices or the wrong hours does more harm than no chatbot.

Also respect the visitor who wants a person. In a Gartner survey of 5,728 customers (2024), 64% said they'd prefer companies didn't use AI for customer service, and the top worry was that it would get harder to reach a person. Keep your phone number and a contact form in plain sight next to the chat.

What to look for in an AI chatbot

  • It answers only from your information, and says when it doesn't know instead of guessing.
  • It tells visitors it's an AI.
  • It collects contact details and gets them to you quickly, somewhere you'll actually check.
  • It can book into your calendar, or hand out your booking link, inside the hours you set.
  • Changing your hours, prices or services is easy, or someone does it for you.
  • It works on a phone screen, not just a desktop.
  • The price is clear: the monthly fee, any setup fee, and any limits on how much it can be used.
  • You know who can read the chats and where they're kept.

For a sense of what people-staffed chat costs, one answering service's pricing page (2026) lists people-staffed live chat from $143 a month for 10 chats. If you answer chats yourself, the cost is your time and the chats that come in while you're busy.

AERIOX's AI chat agent

AERIOX, a local company in Jupiter, Florida, sets up and runs an AI chat agent for small businesses. There are two ways to get it:

  • On the website you already have: $99 a month from go-live, setup included.
  • With a new website: the Website + booking + AI chat package is $750 upfront, plus $99 a month total for hosting, AI chat and automated scheduling. Setup is included. The website fee is non-refundable, and you see the draft first. You own the finished site, domain and content.

A real person on AERIOX's team sets it up with you and tunes it. If most of your customers call rather than type, the phone matters more; AERIOX's AI receptionist covers that and is billed separately.

Questions owners ask

Is an AI chatbot worth it for a small business website?
It is when your site gets steady traffic and visitors ask the same questions, want to book, or leave without calling. If few people visit or nearly everyone phones you, put the money into answering the phone first.
How much does an AI chatbot cost for a small business?
It varies by provider and how much it's used, so ask about setup fees and usage limits. For comparison, one answering service lists people-staffed live chat from $143 a month for 10 chats (2026). AERIOX's AI chat agent is $99 a month on your existing site, setup included.
Can an AI chatbot book appointments?
Some can, either by booking into your calendar or by handing visitors your booking link. AERIOX's $750 Website + booking + AI chat package includes online booking and automated scheduling.
Do customers actually like talking to chatbots?
Many would rather not. In a 2024 Gartner survey, 64% of customers said they'd prefer companies didn't use AI for customer service. A chatbot that answers quickly, admits it's an AI and makes it easy to reach a person is the fair way to use one.
Should a website chatbot say it's an AI?
Yes. Visitors should know who they're talking to, and a chatbot that pretends to be a person loses trust the moment it gets something wrong. Say it's an AI up front and keep your phone number visible for anyone who wants a person.
Do I need a chatbot if I already have an AI receptionist?
Not necessarily. They cover different doors: the receptionist answers your phone, the chatbot answers your website. Start with whichever one your customers use most.
